Tekst achterflap

Marisol rose to instant fame in 1960s New York with her vividly painted wooden sculptures. The American artist of Venezuelan descent combined Pop Art, folk art, found objects, and self-portraits into highly distinctive, often satirical ensembles. With a keen eye, she addressed the central issues of her time and of our own: the position of women, social inequality, consumer culture, environmental concerns, and the exercise of power and fame. Despite her innovative body of work, spanning more than five decades and encompassing not only sculpture but also drawings, prints, and photography, Marisol gradually faded from public view. Through approximately 100 artworks from all phases of Marisol’s career, this book provides an overview of her oeuvre, with particular attention to her connections with Europe.
